Trying to recover from losing a job can seem one of the most challenging things in the world. It’s not just the humiliation of losing your job, but adapting to any sudden changes in lifestyle and everything that seems familiar. If you’ve been in the position of losing a job, it’s important that you do everything you can to make sure that you recover quickly and find another one.

1. Avoid negative thoughts about your previous company. Whatever the reasons why you lost your job not thinking negatively can be quite a challenge. However, the last thing you need to do is waste time and energy on feeling bitter. If you want to recover quickly from losing a job you have to make it a priority to banish negative thoughts.

2. Don’t self sabotage. If you have any negative thoughts about yourself due to your experiences in losing a job, then you need to forget them. Food is fuel and you need it to keep going, but it needs to be the right type of food. Losing a job is bad enough. You don’t want to make the situation worse by not eating or drinking healthily.

6. Exercise regularly. Make sure that you are exercising regularly and keeping yourself as fit as possible. You want to ensure that you’re as physically fit as possible to take any new job opportunities that arise.

7. Be flexible. You may have very clear ideas about the sort of job that you want next. Remain flexible and do not close your mind to different opportunities. If you do, you may find yourself shutting the door on chances that could turn out to be very good for you.

8. Be sociable: It can be very easing after losing a job to isolate yourself from everyone else. This is something to be avoided. Make sure that you remain sociable and have contact with friends and family.

9. Find a buddy. If you’re out of work for more than a few days this can be very lonely. Use a buddy if appropriate. They can encourage you in finding the next job. Just make sure that it is the right buddy. The last thing you want to do is choose someone who will sit round, commiserate with you and actually make you more miserable.

10. Network: Make sure that people know you are in the market for a new job. Talk to people. Make sure you have joined or your details are up to date on a professional network such as LinkedIn.

Recovering from losing a job is never easy, but it’s important that you do everything that you can for yourself, such as avoiding negative self-talk, boosting your self esteem and remaining positive. Taking control of your situation will help you move on to the next stage of your career.
